Current discussions on pardoning those with cannabis convictions for amounts that are now legal to possess in Canada, will still bar those with conviction records from travelling to the USA.
Expungement, on the other hand, would destroy the record, as if it never existed.
The Supreme Court of Canada struck down the cannabis laws, describing their enforcement as grossly excessive and abhorrent, and cruel and unusual punishment, inconsistent with the Rights and Freedoms and values of Canadians.
Over the next six weeks, April - May 2019, Parliament has before it two bills to begin to right a profound injustice of historical significance, one granting pardons, the other expungement.
Now is the time to write, call, email or visit the office of your member of Parliament, and urge them to do the right thing and bring this travesty of injustice to an end for hundreds of thousands of Canadians.
